Te wā o Matariki me Puanga, a time for reflecting on our past and preparing for the future. What better time for us to announce some exciting changes amongst our kāhui. The partners of Kāhui Legal are delighted to announce the appointment of three senior rōia Māori to the partnership: Stephanie Northey, Tara Hauraki*, and Renata Davis*. Our new partners bring a strong breadth of experience and can assist our people in various areas, including litigation, family law, and commercial/property.
Stephanie Ngahuia Northey
Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Tukorehe, Ngāi Te Rangi
Stephanie is an experienced litigator, working primarily in family law, and dealing with all matters that impact whānau. She is Lawyer for Child, Lawyer for Subject Person, Counsel to Assist for mental health matters, and is also a member of the panel of lawyers approved to undertake work for the Central Authority (Ministry of Justice) in relation to applications under the Hague Convention on international Child Abduction and for the International Recovery of Maintenance. Stephanie is based in our Rotorua tari.
Tara Hauraki
Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Porou
Tara is part of our litigation team at Kāhui Legal. She has appeared as counsel at all levels of the NZ courts in proceedings involving historic and contemporary Māori legal issues. Tara provides advice to clients on public law, the law relating to trusts, Maori land law, legislative and regulatory reform. She specialises in issues relating to the Treaty of Waitangi, including historical Treaty claims and Treaty of Waitangi settlements. Tara is based in our Te Whanganui a Tara tari.
Renata Davis
Ngāi Tahu, Kāti Māmoe, Waitaha
Renata is part of our commercial team at Kāhui Legal. He advises iwi, hapū, Māori land and Māori business owners on commercial, contracting, and property matters. He also has particular expertise in forestry, the New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme, climate change regulation, and an interest in green energy developments. Renata was born and raised in Murihiku/Southland. Mahinga kai is an important foundation in Renata’s life – he and his whānau continue to participate in the annual heke to the islands surrounding Rakiura to gather tītī. Renata is based in our Te Whanganui a Tara tari.
The appointment of our new tumuaki coincides with the firm celebrating another important milestone – its 20-year anniversary. We know that our new partners will continue to build on our whakapapa by supporting our people and the Māori economy long into the future.
